And the system is new enough that drivers aren’t aware of all its perks. So, here’s a rundown on how IQ.DRIVE simplifies driving. More importantly, here’s how it helps keep you, your passengers, and everyone else on the roads safer.

A low-stress commute in your VW vehicle
Long commutes get old fast. Understandably, focusing on the road, dealing with traffic, and staying safe is a challenge, whether you’re anticipating a busy workday or coming home from a rough shift. VW removes some of the stress with Travel Assist.
This partially autonomous driving mode uses cameras and sensors to control the vehicle as long as your hands are on the wheel. It will function up to 95 miles per hour, and it’s sophisticated enough to catch when drivers aren’t paying attention. If your hands leave the wheel, it’ll sound alarms until you take hold again. Next, if you fail to take the wheel, other Volkswagen IQ.DRIVE functions will kick in to safely bring the car to a stop.
Basically, Travel Assist is safe and savvy enough to guide you through your daily commute – as long as you’re attentive.
Catches cars in your blind spot
If you second-guess yourself while switching lanes, you’re not alone. However, double-checking is often necessary since there could be a car hiding in your blind spot.
Volkswagen IQ.DRIVE removes some of the guesswork with blindspot monitoring. This feature lets you know if a car is lurking in your blind spot when you go to make a lane change. Consequently, it helps you avoid collisions with vehicles that you wouldn’t be able to see otherwise.
Warns you about collision risks
Somewhere between 90 to 99 percent of car accidents are caused by human error. A lot of these can be attributed to driver negligence, like speeding, drowsy driving, or distracted driving. The Volkswagen IQ.DRIVE system helps prevent distraction-related accidents by warning you about surrounding traffic.
For example, if you’re getting too close to the car ahead of you, it’ll sound an alarm to catch your attention. If you don’t respond, it can apply the brakes to prevent an accident. Further, the warning feature works for obstacles, including pedestrians.
Helps prevent accidents while backing out
Accidents are especially common in parking lots. However, Volkswagen IQ.DRIVE uses sensors and cameras to prevent rear collisions. If a vehicle gets in your way while backing out, the system can engage the brakes to prevent a fender bender. The same thing goes for avoiding pedestrians and obstacles.
Stops lane drifting
Lane drifting is a dangerous side effect of distracted driving. Consequently, VW’s tech team addressed this by adding lane-keeping abilities to IQ.DRIVE. The system kicks in above 37 MPH to keep your vehicle in place if it senses an unplanned lane change. It can do this as long as there are clear lane markers.

Finally, Volkswagen IQ.DRIVE can intervene if you become incapacitated while driving. If the system notices that your hands aren’t on the wheel and that you’re ignoring alerts, it can stop the car in a safe place.

Most of the 2021 VW models come equipped with this driver assistance technology. It’s in the new Tiguan, Atlas Cross Sport, ID.4, and Passat.
As automation becomes more common, we expect that VW will continue building on Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE. It’s already making an appearance in 2022 vehicles like the all-new Volkswagen Taos.
